Marmaris Castle - Historical Places

Hafsa Sultan Caravanserai is located at the entrance of the narrow and stepped street leading to the castle. It is understood from the inscription on the entrance gate of the caravanserai that it was built in 1545 by the Ottoman ruler Kanuni Sultan Süleyman on behalf of his mother. The purpose of the construction is related to accommodation and trade during the Rhodes campaign. The caravanserai has a rectangular plan and two floors and consists of seven small large rooms and a bath. The lower floors of the room are used for shops, and the upper floors are used for accommodation and are covered with arches. Marmaris Castle and Caravanserai exhibit an uniqueness to the complex structures of the period.
A significant part of the castle was destroyed during the First World War in 1914 by the artillery of a French battleship. It was known that there were 18 houses, a fountain and a cistern.
