Saklıkent Canyon - Historical Places
Saklıkent Canyon is the canyon formed by Karaçay, the tributary of Eşen Stream, which draws the Antalya-Muğla border. In the calcareous area where water can easily be eroded, a steep and deep canyon is formed with the help of fault cracks. Its length is 18 km and its height is 200 m. The narrowest place falls to 2 meters. The flow of Karaçay which is a branch of Eşen Stream is 14ında17 m³ / sec at the exit of the Canyon.
Since the bottom of the canyon is filled with strong flowing water, it is impossible to pass through the water. The entrance can be made with a wooden bridge of 200 meters attached to the steep slopes of the canyon with iron bars. After the bridge there are strong Karstic springs which are very cold. 180-210 thousand tourists come to the area which is used as a picnic place in summer season.
The surrounding area of the canyon was declared in the Saklıkent National Park with the Official Gazette dated 06.06.1996 and taken under protection. The national park area of 12,390 hectares includes Kaş and Fethiye's three villages. The plant communities seen in the area are Maki, Red Pine, Larch and Cedar communities according to the height.
The discharge is very severe and cold water flows. It is 16 km from the Saklikent turnoff in the direction of Kınık from Patara to the west of Antalya and very close to the ancient city of Xantos.
The discovery of the canyon is based on a very recent history. According to rumors, the canyon discovered by a shepherd following his goat fleeing here becomes a subject of curiosity in the surrounding settlements. Following the notification of the shepherd, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry declared Saklıkent as a National Park, then with the support of private companies, Saklıkent became its present state.
